Chapter 11 Recap Assignment

Q Gender and Advertising For this assignment, using a content analysis methodology, you will explore how media plays an important for in shaping our body image perceptions and our cultural expectations of bodies and beauty. STEP 1: Search magazines, websites, newspapers, blogs, or other media venues to find advertisements. Search for advertisements with people in them that are related in some way to sex, gender, or sexuality, as discussed in our class discussions. They can be either print ads, virtual ads or commercials. You should try to locate advertisements that depict men and/or masculinities and women and/or femininities and other gender identities (remember that these may be covert and not so obvious at first glance). STEP 2: Find 10 different advertisements—look for those that portray a “negative” or stereotypical view on gender or sexuality, some that portray a “positive” view on gender or sexuality and those that portray a neutral view of gender or sexuality. Please provide links to these advertisements. It is understandable that this is a small sample size, but should still provide some useful information. STEP 3: Answer the following questions about the advertisements you found (your responses could also be submitted as audio/video). 1. Were these primary sources or secondary sources? Explain 2. What are some of the strengths and limitations of this type of research methodology? 3. What variables did you identify in your analysis? (These are variables that you determine from your investigation and are not preset except for the fact that you are researching how media influences our perceptions of body image) (List at least 3 variables that you identified) 4. How does this advertisement portray gender, sex, or sexuality? What is the ad intentionally trying to sell? What unintentional messages might it also be sending? (eg. you should identify the manifest and latent content of the advertisements that you analyzed; clearly identify and label the manifest and latent content you discovered) 5. Who is the intended audience of this advertisement? Are there any stereotypes in this ad? How do you think this ad is received? Do you think it is effective? Explain. (what you are attempting to do here is create some form of grounded theory, that you will recall from your interview assignment). STEP 4: Write a summary paragraph describing your own personal views on gender in advertising. Do you think advertising on the whole is becoming less stereotyped, or more so? How have you seen examples of this in your own life? What steps, if any, do you think should be taken to improve future advertisements? If you could make adjustments or changes to this advertisement, what would you do, and why? Your assignment is due Monday December 7 @ 11:59 PM. If I understand it correctly I believe the video advertisements that I have selected and listed above would be secondary sources. All of my sources that I picked have been tweaked for presentation as the powerpoint mentioned when going over it for this week so they would be secondary sources.
